Mustangs improve to 7-0 after 62-20 win

Merritt’s football team stayed undefeated Friday afternoon by cruising to a 62-20 rout over Akron-Fairgrove.

The Mustangs are now 5-0 in the Mid-Michigan 8-Man Conference and 7-0 overall, tying the school record for wins in a season.

“It was a good team win and a great day for it,” said Merritt coach Rob Girvin, referring to both his team’s effort and the picture-perfect weather. “We had a great crowd with the Mini Mustangs and cheerleaders here.”

Girvin’s team exploded to a 34-0 lead early in the second quarter, allowing him to let everyone on the roster hit the field for extended amounts of time.

“Everyone got to play quite a bit, which is what we planned on,” he said. “Everybody got to contribute and hopefully we can keep the train rolling and do the same thing next week as well.”

Merritt’s top contributor once again was quarterback John Basile, who leads all eight-man quarterbacks in Michigan in passing.

Basile, who was named Homecoming King at halftime, completed four touchdown passes, recorded a rushing touchdown and threw for a total of 226 yards.

“He’s doing a great job leading the team both offensively and defensively,” Girvin said of Basile, who also racked up three solo tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

Basile threw two touchdown passes to Matt Shather, one to Austin Oswald and one to Tim Shamblin.

Shamblin led the team in tackles with 10 while Oswald also recorded a touchdown on the ground.

The Mustangs will try to extend their record to 8-0 next week against Carsonville-Port Sanilac.
