Stevenson's Gardiner, Dakota's Jennings also qualify

Lutheran North’s girls golf team punched a ticket to the state finals Wednesday afternoon, winning its Division 4 regional at Heather Hills Golf Course in Bruce Township.

The Mustangs shot a combined 321 on Wednesday; 20 strokes better than second-place Ladywood.

Leading the way was senior captain Sydney Martens, who shot a 73.

“My chipping was really good today,” said Martens, who also shot a career-best 73 two weeks ago at the county meet. “I made some pretty good putts and drives, too.”

Junior captain Serena Nguyen was next on the team with 78.

Katie Rittner (83), Makenna Kuppler (87) and Grace Farquhar (88) rounded out the scoring for the Mustangs.

“We’ve got some very talented workers here,” said Lutheran North coach Lori Gill. “They work hard, they set out with a goal and they just focus match by match.”

Gill’s team has now qualified for states for a fifth-consecutive year, but the Mustangs are still looking for that elusive title.

“It would be 19 years and coming for me, but it would be really special,” she said when asked about the possibility of winning a state championship. “This is a very special team and we’ve got really good chemistry.”

It would also be extremely special to Martens, who has been to states all four years of her high school career.

“It would mean a lot to show how far we’ve come,” she said. “Each year I’ve gone to state finals and to win it in my last year would be awesome.”

Joining the Mustangs at states on October 14th and 15th are Ladywood and Almont.

Ladywood finished second to Lutheran North by shooting a total score of 341 while Almont finished third at 367.

Mia Korns (83) and Avery Bruno (87) of Everest Collegiate along with Grace VanDellen (93) of Lutheran Northwest will also make solo trips to states, as they were the top three golfers from Wednesday’s event whose teams did not qualify.

A pair of local golfers; Dakota’s Haley Jennings and Ava Gardiner of Stevenson, qualified as individuals for the upcoming state meet.

They each shot 89, which was good enough to put them in the field for the Division 1 MHSAA Lower Peninsula Finals which will be contested October 14-15 at Forest Akers East in East Lansing.

The three qualifying teams from Twin Lakes were Rochester, Troy Athens and Stoney Creek.
