Greta DeLoach scored twice and a stifling defense, led by keeper Katie Link, helped Grosse Pointe North advance to a Division 1 district championship game with a 3-1 win over cross-town rival Grosse Pointe South.

The Norsemen (7-6-5) went on the offensive almost immediately in Thursday’s first of two semifinals played at Fraser.

Senior midfielder Keri Hryciuk nearly put GPN on the scoreboard in the opening two minutes but her shot from 10 yards out struck the crossbar behind GPS keeper Lana Temrowski (six saves). The Norsemen could have created some breathing room if it weren’t for them striking three crossbars in the game – two in the second half.

“You know, sometimes it doesn’t bounce your way,” GPN coach Olivia Stander said. “They didn’t give up and they didn’t get discouraged. It’s easy to do when you smoke the crossbar a few times; get your head down and get frustrated, especially when you’re playing your rival. But we had a few girls like Greta DeLoach, who were dynamite.”

GPN refused to let up and quickly found the back of the net when Victoria Gallagher, a freshman midfielder, scored on a rebound with 33:57 showing on the game clock.

Nearly 11 minutes later GPN padded its led when Hryciuk’s pass from midfield set DeLoach in alone. From there, the sophomore forward fired a shot into the far upper corner of the net with 23:07 left in the first half.

Temrowski was injured in the first half and had to exit the game for a while after she collided with GPN’s Sia Nezeritis. It appeared the senior goalie suffered a knee injury on the play. Junior Lauren Mellos finished the half for South, however, Temrowski did return for the start of the second half.

GPS (2-12-6) managed to trim its deficit when senior captain Aubrey Leggat scored from close range on the Blue Devils’ only shot of the second half, with 22:59 left in regulation.

Link, GPN’s sophomore keeper, made four saves in the match.

DeLoach scored her second goal on Madeline Mills’ corner kick with 4:04 remaining in the game.

GPN will go for a district title in Saturday’s 5 p.m. final when it will face the winner of the other semifinal between Fraser and Cousino.
