Controlling the play turned out to be huge for Eisenhower’s girls soccer team in its 2-1 Division 1 district quarterfinal win over Rochester on Tuesday night.

The Eagles (19-0-0) took a two-goal lead into the half with goals from Jillian Winarski and Emma Campbell.

They continued to dominate possession, making it hard for the Falcons (9-6-3) to get anything going on offense.

“It really shouldn’t have been just 2-1,” said Eisenhower coach Mehrdad Nekoogar. “We dominated the game and they really had just one shot on goal.”

Rochester’s only shot on goal came in the form of a penalty kick from Maria Broecker with 9:07 left in regulation.

Broecker’s goal cut the Falcons’ deficit to just one, but the Eagles were too strong to allow Rochester another quality scoring chance.

However, the Falcons may have had another shot on goal had it not been for a controversial call in the first half.

A potential Rochester goal was called back because the referee had not yet blown his whistle for the restart.

“I think the girls played really well, but I think having a goal called back on us for a stupid reason is really hard to deal with morally,” said Rochester coach Dustin Coleman. “I think it was a pretty even match and there’s nothing I could be disappointed with from my girls in terms of effort.

Nekoogar, on the other hand, acknowledged that his team needs to capitalize on more of its own chances in order to keep moving through the playoffs.

“We had so many chances that we didn’t utilize,” he said. “It’s the playoffs; if you don’t score, they’re going to come back and try to win the game.

“We just have to take advantage of our chances.”

Eisenhower will face Utica in a district semifinal game on Thursday at 7:45 p.m.
