Romeo scores four unanswered goals after falling behind 4-2

PLYMOUTH >> According to Romeo’s boys hockey coach Nick Badder, his Bulldogs play their best when they feel uncomfortable.

They certainly showed that Saturday afternoon at USA Hockey Arena.

The Bulldogs scored four unanswered goals after Livonia Stevenson scored three times in a span of five minutes and one second in the second period to skate off with the Division 2 state championship after their 6-4 win.

“We were uncomfortable the whole game, a little too uncomfortable for my liking because that’s a good team over there, well coached,” Badder said afterwards. “They play their systems. They’re a playoff team, that’s why Hartland had a problem with them. They do the little things right. They win the battles, get pucks deep and their goalie is unreal. We pulled it out somehow, I don’t know how.”

After Logan Jenuwine gave Romeo a 2-1 lead with a power play goal six minutes into the second period, the Spartans scored the next three goals. Nick Beers and Shane Leonard got it going with a pair of goals 43 seconds apart, which was followed by one from Nate Sudek.

Badder called his lone timeout after the Bulldogs fell behind by two goals and it paid off big time.

Three minutes after the Spartans’ fourth goal Brett Lanski potted his second of the game and just 55 seconds later Luke Kaczor redirected in a shot from the point by Logan Ganfield to tie the game.

“That timeout we went over what we talked about (Friday) night,” Badder said. “First was heart, second was focus and the third was stick together. They all kind of matched up to the game. We were down, they had all the momentum. We were on our heels and we felt it. We just tried to calm the boys down. Once they calmed down and realized it was shift after shift we took over.

“We kind of changed up our forecheck a little bit, played those passes to the middle and everything took off from there,” Badder added. “These guys bought in, they believed in each other and didn’t get frustrated.”

Then things all changed in Romeo’s favor when Livonia Stevenson’s Jake Beaune was sent off for a five-minute major for head butting less than five minutes into the third.

Jenuwine made the Spartans pay quickly with a nice redirect of a shot that was going wide of the net by Ganfield to give Romeo a 5-4 lead with 10:21 left.

“It was explained to me that it was a head butt by our player,” Livonia Stevenson coach David Mitchell said. “It was a deliberate head butt to the so the referees felt that there was no discretion allowed, that they had to give him five and had to give him a DQ.

Steven Morris added an empty-net goal with 16 seconds left from Jenuwine, who finished with two goals and three assists.

“The momentum swings, that’s what you get when you play a high-powered offense,” Mitchell said. “We knew that. We got the 4-2 lead and I’d like to tell you, it was a lot on us, took the foot off the gas, but it was those guys, they got pucks to the net and got pucks through, got some bounces and made some plays.

“When you put pucks on the sticks of guys that score goals like they do, Jenuwine had five points, tells you right there the story of the game,” Mitchell continued. “That’s the type of player he is. You put the pucks on their sticks in key situations and that’s what great players do, they find ways to finish and they finished tonight.”

The Spartans lost in last year’s state championship game after winning the state title in 2013.

“It’s always hard when you get up 4-2, and in a big game like this, playing a good team,” Spartans senior forward Ben Kowalske said. “When they get a goal on you, the doubt will creep in. It happens. You do everything you can to try to go and sometimes bounces don’t go your way. They’re going to capitalize when things don’t go your way. You can kind of feel it, but you try to ignore it and do what you can. When you’re playing a good team, though, they’ll capitalize on your mistakes and find a way to get it done.”

The title was the Bulldogs’ first in hockey, which just wrapped up its 15th season.

“That’s the difference from our sophomore year to now,” Bulldogs senior Nick Blankenburg said. “We used to think we’d win a few playoff games. We didn’t even know about Compuware or the state finals. Our junior year we were in the state quarterfinals and we looked too far ahead. Now this year we pulled it off and kept our heads in every game. We played each game and didn’t look ahead.”

The Bulldogs lost in the state quarters last season, 8-2 to Grosse Pointe South.

“Last year’s loss in the playoff hurt,” Badder said. “Grosse Pointe South took it too us good. They kind of owned us. We didn’t have a playoff game plan. We didn’t have a playoff style. This year I was so hard on these guys. We lost two games and I was still on them. The point I was trying to get across was you have to be a playoff team. You have to hit, you have to block shots and you have to get the puck out of your own end. It’s not high flying, Blanks and Logs show. We’re a whole team and a whole team will win in the end.”

This is the second state title for Romeo this school year. The Bulldogs also won a Division 1 football, while their volleyball team lost in the Class A state finals.

“I think there’s just something special about Romeo, small town feel,” said Romeo goalie Nolan Kare, who finished with 29 saves. “You can see it out there. The entire town was out there for us, just like they were for football and volleyball. We’re blessed to have best fan base in the area."
