Jim Singelyn has created a monster at De La Salle.

One that’s devouring the rest of the swimming teams in Macomb County.

De La Salle finished with 588.5 points Saturday to win its fourth straight Macomb County Boys Swimming and Diving Invitational at L’Anse Creuse North. Intra-district rivals Dakota and Chippewa Valley tied for second place with 256.5 points.

The Pilots won in style, setting seven meet records on the way to their championship.

“They work hard so it’s fun,” Singelyn said. “It’s good for those guys. They’ve earned it. They’re doing this tired. I worked them pretty good last night. To see them step up when you’re tired is the name of the game for the rest of the year. When they’re rested, it should be a lot of fun. We should see some big-time drops.”

Seniors Jack Kucharczyk and P.J. Desmet each set two individual meet records. All three De La Salle relay teams also established new standards.

Kucharczyk, who was named Outstanding Senior Swimmer, erased the oldest meet record from the books when he won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.19. The old mark of 1:59.25 was set by Joe Hojnacki of Warren in 1980. Kucharczyk’s other record came in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 58.45. That eclipsed the 1:00.86 that Anchor Bay’s Nick Victor recorded in 2011.

“We’ve been training hard so I feel really bad,” Kucharczyk said. “When you’re hurting the most is when you’re tested the most. You have to fight a little more.”

Kucharczyk said that the breaststroke is what helped him to his second straight win in the event.

“The breaststroke is my weapon,” he said. “The backstroke needs more work. We’re in the middle of the season and doing some hard training so I’ll take my times now.”

Desmet’s records came in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke. His 52.13 in the fly broke the record of 52.69 that Fraser’s Jacob Klomp set in last year’s meet. Desmet’s 53.00 in the backstroke easily broke his own mark of 54.32 set a year ago.

“The underwater was the difference for me,” Desmet said. “That’s what I work on a lot. The fastest way to move in the water is dolphin kicking under water. That’s the base part of my swim.”

Kucharczyk and Desmet both insist that they don’t have the record books on their minds when they leave the starting blocks. That comes from Singelyn, who held the county breaststroke record for several years before Victor broke it.

“If you get caught up in all the numbers, you’re setting yourself up for a loss,” Singelyn said. “We just try to take care of ourselves the best we can every day, whether we’re at a meet or just practicing, take care of each other and good things will happen. We try not to get caught up in the winning and losing. We know when we’ve beaten somebody big. It’s a stepping stone, but we don’t get caught up in it. We get caught up in taking care of our own business. That’s how we’ve gotten good. That filters down to the younger kids.”

Even losing seniors like Kucharczyk and Desmet, the future looks bright for the Pilots.

“Some of the younger kids for their first time here had some great swims,” Singelyn said. “Daniel Gierlach, a freshman, dropped 13 seconds in the 500. He got excited and just went. We had good swims across the board. It’s starting to come together as a team. The older guys are taking care of the young kids. It took a while. We had to find out who we are as a team. We’re in uncharted waters. It doesn’t get any easier. We have Brother Rice next week and they’re ranked first in Division 1. Then we have one more dual meet, the Catholic League meet and then the state meet. All we look for is our best times at the end of the year.”

Last year, De La Salle finished seventh in the Division 2 state meet.

In addition to the four firsts collected by Desmet and Kucharczyk, the Pilots had firsts from Josh Hodges in the 200 freestyle (1:45.71) and Zach Milke in the 100 freestyle (47.99).

The only swimmers to break the De La Salle stronghold were Klomp, who defending his championship in the 50 freestyle, and Utica’s Dean Wundrach in the 500. Klomp’s winning time of 22.02 edged De La Salle’s Mitch Livingston.

“My start was pretty good. I felt good off the walls in the turns and it helped to have some good competition,” Klomp said. “It was a nice race.”

Klomp set the pool record of 21.73 in a dual meet against LCN earlier this season.

Wundrach’s race was one of the most exciting of the day. He got off to a fast start per instructions from coach Joe Mikol, maintained the lead throughout the race and pulled away from De La Salle’s Daniel Frederick and Chippewa Valley’s Grant Combs in the final 50 yards. His winning time was 4:46.01.

“If you would have said five years ago, when I started swimming, that I would win today I would have laughed,” said Wundrach, who has been swimming only since eighth grade. “I’m really happy with how I swam. I just really wanted this. I could see Dan getting closer and closer, so I just gave it my all.

“What really motivated me was that I just missed my state cut in the 200 free. I wanted to get this one for sure.”

Dakota junior Greg Veselenak defended his championship in the one-meter diving with a total score of 492.55 points. He went into the final rounds with nearly a 25-point lead and extended it to 67 points over runner-up William Spencer of Romeo. Last year, Veselenak’s victory margin was eight points.

“Having a lead put some pressure on me at first because I knew there were some good divers who were going to step up their game,” Veselenak said. “It was very close. There were times when I was in second.”

Veselenak said he had a couple go-to dives.

“My reverse one and a half that I won county with last year,” he said. “Then I stepped up my front two and a half, that I’ve been very inconsistent with this year. Last year I was just perfecting my old dives. This year I put in a lot of new dives.”

Steve Morrow coaches the divers at Dakota and Chippewa Valley and he had four in the top eight. Joining Veselenak were Noah Lesko of Chippewa Valley and Dakota’s Donald Gloede and Gaspare Destasi.

“Greg has a few new dives, a couple of big twisters,” Morrow said. “He’s able to pull up pretty solid on his feet. It’s good to see him go back to back, but this isn’t what he’s training for. We train for one meet — the state meet. I’m excited to see the journey to how we can improve by then. He has a lot of work to do.

“He’s a junior, so he’s where we want him to be. He’s a competitor. He gets to meets like this and he thrives on the competition.”

Chippewa Valley’s second place finish in the 400 freestyle relay gave the Big Reds the two points they needed to pull into a tie with Dakota for second place. The Cougars led by two points going into the final event.

“The MAC Red meet should be exciting with us, Dakota and (Grosse Pointe) South,” said Chippewa Valley coach Tony Grice.

“We moved up everywhere today. The guys swam great. I told them go out and have fun; treat it like any other meet we’ve had this year. I told them not to worry about other people, just race and do your best. It came down to the wire. It couldn’t happen to two better teams. We have a great rivalry and friendship.”

Cougars coach John Samonie was happy with his team’s effort.

“We finished higher than we did last year,” he said. “We’re at the point in our season where we’re training really hard so it’s difficult to swim extremely fast. They’re doing OK. They had a much better second half of the meet. We’ll get some rest in the next week or so and we’ll see how they do in divisions.”
