Fitzgerald kept the beat going with a new coach.

Terry Phillips helped the Spartans take control of the match with a pin, and Taye Ghadiali clinched it with a victory by injury default as Fitzgerald repeated as the MAC Silver Division dual-meet wrestling champion with a 51-27 triumph over visiting Lakeview on Thursday night.

Division champions a year ago when they went 7-0, the Spartans of first-year coach Andrew Ackerman repeated with a 6-0 mark as they handed Lakeview its first Silver defeat of the season.

“This is my first season as a head coach, and these kids make it easy,” Ackerman, a former Utica wrestler, said. “They listen. They work extremely hard in practice.”

Phillips’ pin of Jacob Smith in 4:16 at 135 pounds gave the Spartans a 45-27 lead with four matches remaining.

“That pretty much sealed it for us,” Ackerman said.

The championship was officially the Spartans’ when Ghadiali defeated Teddy Rudrik by injury default at 140.

A total of six Spartans pinned their opponents.

Consecutive falls by Joshua Waltiere at 152 and Bruce Hogan at 160 gave the Spartans an 18-0 lead. Kareem Wallace at 189, Jaime Olvera at 112 and Delante Anderson at 130 also won via pin.

Olvera’s victory over Andrew Valente pushed the Fitzgerald lead to 30-21.

“That was a huge swing for us,” Ackerman said.

Lakeview, which shared the Silver dual-meet title in 2014, carried a 6-0 division record into the match.

“We’re going to be OK,” coach Steve Nicholl said. “We’re a young team. Sometimes this is the way it rolls.

“We had to juggle lineup a little bit today. But that’s this sport: Everybody’s fighting to stay healthy at this point in the season.

“We did well in the MAC, and we’re excited about that.”

Lakeview pushed back after falling behind by 18 points against the Spartans.

Consecutive victories by Leahpor Streeter (pin) at 215, Austin Bauslaugh at 285 and Tom Cacevic (pin) at 103 trimmed the Spartans’ lead to 24-21.

Prior to the Spartans’ match with the Huskies, Fitzgerald defeated Center Line 70-12, and Lakeview defeated Sterling Heights 54-27.
