L’Anse Creuse North boys hockey coach Jon Nader was unsure of how his team would come out after an emotional win over a local rival.

After beating Anchor Bay 8-3 on Friday, the Crusaders were back on the ice Saturday afternoon against FNV (a team composed of students from Freeland, Nouvel Catholic Central and Valley Lutheran High Schools in the Saginaw Area).

Nader admitted his team did not come out with the same emotion of a rivalry game, but they did extend their season opening win streak to five games with a 7-4 victory.

“We played flat; we played down,” was how the coach described how his team came out in the first period. “The intensity wasn’t there.”

LCN was given an early chance to get on the board after a slashing call on a breakaway gave sophomore forward Bryan Vandelinder a penalty shot just 1:45 into the game.

He easily converted his chance and the Crusaders led the Griffins 2-1 after the first period.

Later, Vandelinder came flying down the ice during a 3-on-1 break and took it to the goal himself to net his second goal just 23 seconds into the second period.

Later in the period senior forward Justin Mazzetti netted an unassisted power play goal and Vanderlinder completed his hat trick with a shorthanded goal to stretch the lead to 5-2.

“He is physical, he is strong and he is hard to knock off the puck,” Nader said of Vanderlinder. “He knows how to find the back of the net.”

Early in the third period Griffins forward Ken Kujawa put back a rebound on his own shot to narrow the lead to 5-4, but Crusaders goalie Charles Jawor stood tall for the rest of the game.

Mazzetti added two more goals to add to his four scored on the day to keep LCN undefeated.

“He has excelled like no other,” Nader said of Mazzetti. “The game is just coming his way right now.”

The Crusaders will play in a tournament in Mt. Pleasant next week with a roster of teams that include Jackson Lumen Christi and West Bloomfield.

“We are really looking forward to what this team can do,” said Nader. “They want to go far in March.”
