Austin preview

League: Catholic League West

Coach: Joe Plawecki

Outlook: Its officially time to insert a new chapter in the American History books distributed at the Catholic League school located on 26 Mile Road in Ray Township.

This is the inaugural girls varsity basketball season at Austin.

We have the expectation of every day trying to be better at practice, said Joe Plawecki, the coach. We want to do our best every game and be competitive.

The veteran coach knows the margin of error for his Crusaders is pretty thin. Currently, there are just six players on the roster; one senior and five freshmen.

Senior Tiffany Lacap will play both guard and forward. She was on the schools junior varsity squad last year.

The team will be paced by freshman point guard Maria Schudt, who played at St. Lawrence.

Shes going to be a very nice player, said her coach.

Those two will be joined by Amanda Warren, a 5-10 post player; Cecelia Charrette, an excellent shooter; Kat Fluegel, who has excellent quickness and could turn into a defensive specialist; and Tiffany Ryan, who will help on the perimeter.

The Crusaders will welcome Macomb Christian Thursday at Endeavor Middle School in New Haven.

Its very exciting. This will be the first girls varsity basketball game in school history. These girls have really taken that to heart, said Plawecki.

Noteworthy: It is a return to the Catholic League for Plawecki, who began his coaching career at St. Lads in Hamtramck and later coached at University of Detroit High School. Hes also coached at Anchor Bay, and spent more than two decades with the boys program at Detroit Country Day.

Its a dream come true, said Plawecki. I always wanted to come back to the Catholic League.
