The saying goes, “good things come to those who wait.”

Lutheran North golf coach Lori Gill has waiting 19 years, but she finally was able to collect a state finals team trophy.

The Mustangs finished runner up to Kalamazoo Hackett at the Division 4 state finals, Saturday at Forest Akers East on the campus of Michigan State University.

Lutheran North finished with a two-day total of 693 (347-346). Hackett, which won the title last year, came in with a 684 (344-340).

The Mustangs were just three strokes behind to start the day.

“I know Hackett is a talented and tough team,” said Gill, whose highest finish prior to Saturday was third last season. “(Friday) took a lot out of the girls. It was very cold.

“We were struggling right from the get go,” Gill added. “I’m mostly proud of the girls who struggled and brought their game back.”

One of those golfers was Sydney Nguyen, who had a 46 at the turn, but came back with a 39 on the back nine.

Nguyen (82-80) was fourth overall. The Mustangs other scores came from Kaity Rittner (85-86), Sydney Martens (85-85), Madison Mohr (95-100) and Grace McKelvey (97-95).

Martens finished ninth overall and Rittner was 10th.

Frankenmuth (722) was third, followed by Ladywood (725) and Lansing Catholic (761).

DIVISION 1: Stevenson’s Brooke Symons carded a 93 on day two at the Division 1 state finals, which was six strokes better than her score Friday. She finished tied for 59th.

DIVISION 3: Regina came in fifth with a two-day total of 747 (368-379).

TX Body: The Saddlelites were led by Kendall Graves (86-83), Sheridan Graves (85-91), Lucy Cornwell (91-97), Emily Demers (106-109) and Hannah Taras (128-108).
